The William Pike Challenge Award
At AIS our mission is to care for ourselves, each other and the world around us; to enjoy lifelong learning; to be confident, refelctive global citizens; to think curiously, creatively and critically; and to challenge ourselves to be our best.
The William Pike Challenge Award compliments the IMYC in providing adolescents with extra-curricula means to achieve our mission. Together with PSHE, our focus on International Mindedness, and developing our Personal Goals and Dispositions, we aim to provide a holistic education for students. |
Middle Years students are expected to successfully completed the William Pike Challenge each year. This unique award has been implemented in a number of New Zealand schools, with great results and feedback. The William Pike Challenge Award is an outdoor, community and personal interest award that provides students and their mentors with support, resources and motivation to facilitate education outside the classroom. The WPCA runs over a full academic year and consists of:
· Five outdoor activities that are 2 hours or longer *
· 20 hours of community service
· 20 Hours of personal development through a new sport or hobby
* Five outdoor activities will be facilitated by middle years teachers throughout the course of the year that meet the time requirements and suggestions of outdoor activity of the WPCA. Some activities will happen in class time, such as a hike in PE. In some instances the outdoor activity will happen outside school hours. These activities are optional as they may be associated with extra costs.
Students are assigned to teacher mentors to help guide them through the process of completing the challenge. Mentor teachers support students with accessing the challenge hub (the WPCA online platform), checking in on progress, and suggesting ideas.
