Primary School Language Arts

Language Arts at AIS is taught through the English National Curriculum Learning Goals and International Primary Curriculum. Teachers plan a balanced curriculum to develop knowledge, skills and understanding developed through practical application. The key components to Language Arts are:
Speaking and Listening
Reading
Writing
Phonics, Spelling and Grammar
Handwriting
Knowledge and understanding learned may then be applied in different contexts. For example children may learn the grammar, text and tone appropriate for the text type 'persuasive writing' through identifying features in various real life contexts.
The children may then be asked to apply their knowledge and understanding in writing their own persuasive letter, for example- a letter to the local authorities requesting more waste bins on the beaches to reduce the amount of litter. The context of this writing would be linked to the IPC unit the children were studying.
Children learn progressively, from Reception through to Year 6. Teachers build upon the children's prior knowledge and ensure learning is differentiated to meet the needs of every child. Teachers feedback is an essential part of the learning process. This may be shared through marking in books or orally. The children are aware of their next steps in their learning and how to succeed.

At AIS, we want our children to develop a love of reading and writing and so all teachers ensure lessons are creative, child-centred and thought-provoking.  Children have opportunities to share what they have learned with each other as well as present ideas for what and how, they want to learn.

Speaking and Listening, including drama and role-play are a key area within the Language Arts program. Through this, children can develop their communication skills and have opportunities to use their home language with their peers. Home Learning is provided regularly so children can practice new skills and share their learning with their families.

We are using the Learning Ladders online system to track children's coverage and progress in Language Arts. All parents can log into their child's learning ladders here:  www.laddersathome.co.uk
