The Primary Curriculum
AIS Primary School follows the International Primary Curriculum and the National Curriculum of England and Wales Learning goals for English and Maths. Where possible English and Maths subject learning goals are taught within the IPC units. The English National Curriculum Goals are closely aligned with the IPC Language Arts Learning Goals.
The International Primary Curriculum provides the structure for learning in the Primary school from Years 1 to 6.
The IPC combines Subject Learning Goals, International Learning Goals and Personal Learning Goals to provide an integrated and holistic learning experience for the students. The IPC provides a very clear structure and sequence for children’s learning in all subject areas. The IPC requires teachers to pay close individual attention to the achievement of each student. This sensitivity to the needs of every student is the key to creating a school curriculum that fulfils our Mission Statement objective: to ensure that all children enjoy learning and challenge themselves to do their best. |
The IPC Learning Goals

The IPC Learning Goals are benchmarked into three ‘Mileposts’ that enable schools to track a student’s progress towards achieving the goals for a subject. Milepost 1 is for Years 1 & 2, Milepost 2 is for Years 3 & 4 and Milepost 3 is for Years 5 & 6.
Below is a small example that shows how students would progress through the Mileposts towards one particular goal in one subject area:

Milepost 1 - by the end of Year 2, the vast majority of children will:
- Be able to ask and answer questions about the past
- Be able to give some reasons for particular events and changes
- Be able to describe and identify reasons for and results of historical events, situations, and changes in the periods they have studied
- Be able to describe and make links between the main events, situations and changes both within and across periods.
Assessment and ReportingTeachers assess students on how they are progressing towards the Learning Goals. Teachers use a variety of assessment strategies for both formative and summative assessment. Please refer to the Assessment Policy for further information. IPC learning goals may be categorised into three groups.
Knowledge which may be assessed with questioning and quizzes and the terms Working Towards, Meeting and Exceeding are used. Skills are assessed using the the terms Beginning, Developing and Mastering . Both students and teachers assess progress and determine appropriate next steps for learning. Understanding Learning Goals are evaluative (in line with IPC principles) and teachers discuss and support students’ understanding through reflection lessons, verbal and written comments, and discussion. When we write our Mid-Year and End of Year reports parents can see how children are progressing towards the Learning Goals. To the right is an example from a Year 3 report. Age appropriate standardised assessments are also completed annually by students- GL and ISA assessments are taken for English and Maths and the PASS survey for (pupil Attitudes to self and School) are completed annually. Data from all assessment s used constructively by teachers to support the children's learning. |
